Tan Sri William Cheng Heng Jem is the Group Executive Chairman of the Lion Group of Companies which has its main interests in steel, retail and property development. He has more than 35 years of management experience in various industries and holds directorships in Lion Corporation Berhad, Lion Diversified Holdings Berhad, Lion Forest Industries Berhad, Parkson Holdings Berhad, Silverstone Corporation Berhad and ACB Resources Berhad, all in Malaysia; Parkson Retail Group Limited in Hong Kong; and Parkson Retail Asia Limited and Lion Asiapac Limited, both in Singapore.
The Lion Group has operations in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Myanmar, USA and Mexico. It started with the trading and manufacturing of steel furniture and steel fabricated products in the 1930’s and under the stewardship of Tan Sri Cheng, is today, one of the leading steel manufacturers in the region; producing hot rolled coils, cold rolled coils, direct reduced iron (DRI), hot briquetted iron (HBI), steel bars and wire rods for the manufacturing, engineering, fabrication and construction industries.
Tan Sri Cheng is the President of the Malaysia Steel Association which represents the upstream steel companies and provides a platform for the exchange of knowledge and cooperation for the benefit of the local steel industry. He is also aFounding Trustee of The Community Chest, Malaysia, a company limited by guarantee incorporated for charity purposes.
After serving as the President of The Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (“ACCCIM”), and The Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor (“KLSCCCI”) from 2003 to 2012, Tan Sri William Cheng is now a Life Honorary President of ACCCIM and an Honorary President of KLSCCCI.
He was conferred the honorary title of “Tan Sri” by the King of Malaysia in 1991 for his contribution towards economic activities and community services in the country.
